DD Lingo

Back to Funny Stuff

Every hobby has lingo. You know, those terms that help the people who are involved in the hobby to know what everybody is talking about! For example, know all sorts of lingo like SCSI, IDE, newbie, WWW, IRC, and the list can go on and on... Well, we, the rummagers of trash, have our own sort of special language. You can consider this listing as a glossary for when you go out garbage picking or dumpster diving. I have listed some below.

When your cheap, enjoy old electronics, and are just flat bored, turn to the curb for some fulfillment.....

"CODE RED"- Something yelled while in a dumpster if you see danger, such as the owner coming outside not looking happy, to all your friends followed by a mad sprint to the Dumpster mobile... (very entertaining to fake out people with this one... hehe...)

Dumpster mobile- that one car that without it, hitting the dumpsters just isn't the same, in my case its Todd's festiva...

Picker- somebody who drives along streets on a garbage night to search through other people's trash.

Diver- somebody who searches through dumpsters near buildings, construction sites, educational facilities, or other such rich areas of collected discards.

Clutter- a collection of garbage goodies in a dumpster or on a curb.
Example of usage: "Hey, look at that clutter over there!"

Sweet Spot- an area known for its frequency of good finds.  (foothills apartments in NLR)

Skunky- trash that smells bad. Example of usage: "I found a really neat couch, but it was skunky and I had to throw it out."

Spotter- the person (ususally not the driver) in a car whose purpose is to be on the lookout for quality clutter.

Navigator- this person is the best at giving traveling directions, your best hope of not getting lost, can be the same person as the spotter.

Neuvau Riche (pronounced Noo-vo Reech) - these are the people to avoid; these are the "new rich" your "yuppies"; they are generally upper - middle class people who live in recently built houses; they have new stuff and won't be throwing anything out better than coffee grounds

Old Rich- these people are exactly what the term implies: established; now, you can't really say that these people are definitely rich since they generally tend to be middle class; the middle class folks tend to set out good, quality clutter pretty often and you can get some pretty good finds; also tend to be compliant with garbage pickers; but, there are also those who are VERY rich; when they get tired of a VCR since it's too old (i.e. more than 5 years), they get a new one and throw out the old one....you can get some pretty quality electronics from these people, but less frequently

Rootin' Stick- Sturdy metal plastic or wooden rod, of appropriate lengthfor rooting through a dumpster, trashcan, etc. Sometimes a promisingdumpster has some scuzz in it. You should always have a good Rootin' Stick. They're very hard to find.

CSI (curb side illuminator)- it's one of those big 500k flood lights that plugs into the cigarette lighter. I got it from value city for 8 bucks. dearborn heights association of curb side treasure finders )
